The Malayan Red Cross Society is a branch of the British Red Cross. It was established in the year 1951. The Malayan Red Cross Society later changed to Malaysian Red Cross Society and then changed to Malaysian Red Crescent Society. This organization has proudly created a record for its service and it aims on serving for a certain type of groups such as the needy, sick and suffering humans in this country. Its members are chosen from many types of social groups such as students, teenagers who are not schooling and also adults are given the chance to run activities which relates to humanity as well as preparing then as future leaders and also fulfill tasks related to social welfares.
Currently, the Malaysian Red Crescent Society plays a vital role in and outside the country in services related to humanity and decrease the suffering. As a voluntary organization, it provides a helping hand for the government, and also counseling services. It is also active in providing services in emergency situations such as natural disaster, operation to save the victims and in the healing process followed by many other humanitarian services. It also helps in preparing and providing food, clothes and medication for the Police and Army who are working in a mission to safe, shift and provide first aid for the victims of a disaster.
In a disaster, Malaysian Red Crescent Society provides many services for the society such as donating blood, recruiting new members, social welfare and health service during public events, tracing lost persons, visiting the disabled or handicapped and old people, as well as training groups of people to help in accidents. In Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, the Malaysian Red Crescent Society has been involved in providing services to thousands of Indochina people mainly to the Vietnam refugees with the help of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Federation of Red Cross Society, other International organizations and also the government agencies of our country. This organization is highly supported by the people for its social and welfare programs and this has brought a good name for the members and also the nation.
The effective and hard work of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society in providing its service in the camps and transit canters has helped to shift the refugees to a third country immediately. Besides that, this organization has also helped the Kampuchean refugees under the agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees and the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organization.
The Malaysian Red Crescent Society is a member of the Federation of Red Cross Society. Today, the organization is the director of the Red Cross Leaders Convention and other Red Crescent Societies from the Asian Countries. The Malaysian Red Crescent Society was awarded the Nansen medal in 1977 as a token of appreciation in helping the refugees.
